22/01/2019Reflect Writing About Failure

已更新:2019年10月24日

(Students of the designer maker course have discussed what is our relationship to failure at 9th January.)

(Bridget analyzed the reasons why each classmate failed and divided the similar experience of failure into groups. As the picture above, my work "salt" and other classmate's work named "water" became a group, and our reasons for the failure are almost all from the production process, like temperature control.)

On that day, I outlined the failed process about crystallizing salt into a large block of sculptural salt blocks, because of the lack of familiarity with the method of making salt. It cost a lot of time to get an answer that is not in line with the idea, is not satisfactory. Definitely, failure is frustrating for me. Like the writer Elizabeth Gilbert mentioned in her Ted speech, the idea of giving up writing is becoming more and more intense after being rejected by the publishing house over and over again. But did you really just give up? The answer, of course, is no. She mentioned that she loved writing more than she loved herself, so whether she failed or succeeded, she would like to go "home" to continue writing ("home" here refers to the state of continuing writing). The speech also mentioned how to stay creativity when you fail. I think it is divided into the following two points: 1. Analyzing the cause of the failure and making adjustments to record the relevant data for the failure. This would make the second test more experienced than the first test and closer to the final target. 2. The discovery of a major flaw in the project does not always mean the end of the project, sometimes it provides a more productive approach. For example, in my experiment (pictured below), although it was not possible to get a complete salt crystal due to temperature control, I found in the failure product that such an object was better able to show the texture of salt than I had imagined.

When it comes to artistic creation, on the one hand we use our endless optimism as the driving force of fantasy, on the other hand, we go back to reality through constant questioning, injecting reality into fantasy. So the relationship between failure and me, just like the relationship between a teacher and a student. Guiding and reminding me to keep thinking and questioning.
