「Project Research」What is Childhood Trauma

Because of my own experience from the past, I am very interested in the exploration of childhood trauma. Nowadays, people have an understanding of the consequences of childhood trauma (some common mental illnesses), but little research on the causes of these diseases. In the first stage of my exploration, read relevant books and search information is what I need to pay attention to now. In addition, there are two basic questions that I need to answer.

1. What is childhood trauma?

2. How serious is it?

Based on Freud's theory of childhood trauma and Nadine burke harris' analysis of childhood trauma, people's experiences in childhood are directly related to behaviour after growing up.

Childhood trauma is defined as some bad experiences that people have encountered during childhood. These include neglect, abandonment, sexual abuse and physical abuse, violence against parents and siblings, or mental illness in parents. These experiences and memories remained with time. All types of childhood trauma, whether physical or emotional abuse, can result in difficulties for patients. Some events in our lives include sound, the touch feel of fabric, smells, specific words, being touched in a certain way or bodily sensations. These sudden events will cause the pain of different degrees for patients, such as self-injury, binge eating or drug misuse. The impact of childhood trauma will make an irreversible stamp in the patient's mental world. The traumatic experience is through a triangular cycle, as shown in below :

The emotional and cognitive impairment of people is derived from childhood traumatic experiences, which lead to unhealthy self-destructive behaviour and increase the risk of violence or re-victimization. As the number of bad experiences increases, the risk of problems from childhood to adulthood rises too.

In Nadine Burke Harris's speech (2014, 11:49), she quoted the opinion of Dr Robert Block who is the former President of the American Academy of Pediatrics; She claimed that childhood trauma is the biggest unsolved public health problem facing our society in nowadays.
