「Reflect thinking」Unit 1 feedback tutorial

Concept Part

After discussing with Maiko, I did realize that the lack of continuity between the concept and ideas of the current stage between the previous work. The premise based on the previous work are ignored in the next step. For example, in my study proposal, I stated that I want to create a space or make a sculpture in the form of a chain, which did not seem to be directly connected to the work I had previously developed. One step should lead to another step in the action that I took. Regarding the audience facing the work, Maiko reminded me that I have been subjectively setting my audience as a group with childhood traumatic experiences, which in fact has limited my audience. I can use my personal childhood traumatic experience as a starting point to think about each person's trauma, not only in childhood but also in adulthood, which means that my work can be radiated to a larger number of people who have traumatic experiences from past. In addition, when thinking about the method of healing, I have always been confused about how to choose a cure, because everyone has different traumas, different feelings, and different methods, I can’t choose an appropriate one or a specific method to achieve the effect of healing wounds. I was inspired by completing the research paper, I could look at the entire work from the suggested perspective and presented my work as my proposal for healing the wounded group. Therefore, I intend to start exploring ways that have a healing effect for me personally. Then, I need to clearly distinguish myself from the psychologist and use art therapy as the design method. Just like last week's crit event, Oscar reminded me that the essence of art therapy is to let the patients themselves make the artwork. Therefore, I need to think about the healing performance of this project from two directions: 1. Actively (allowing the audience to actively participate in this work, including the production part) 2. Passively (such as mentioned before that allows the audience to enter a space, passive healing).

Methodology Part

At this stage, I am still confused about my design method. From my reflection on Unit 1, I also found my own design method loopholes. Unclear design methods lead that my project will be disconnected from previous projects. This is where I need to pay attention. At this point, Yiyuan gave me some suggestions. I realized that rethinking previous projects and completed work, and making mindmaps may be very helpful for me to organize concepts and methodology.

Material Part

Perhaps it was because I was too concerned about the trauma part, my thinking about salt became scarce. Although the material tests in the last school year have given me many surprises, I have not continued to explore them. But now, I realize that I need to keep going, especially to study some special effects with great potential: for example the rust and salt and the burnt salt. Besides, materials are not limited to table salt, and the experiment with natural salt is the same. It's important because it will determine my choice of which kind of salt in final work. Of course, it is also important to state the reasons for the choice.

Next steps

I think the value of the process is more important than the result. The problem I really need to pay attention to is that in the process of project promotion, I easily lose the continuity of thinking about the project. Therefore, I need a clear mindmap to re-synthesize and understand the keywords of the current project (expressing / healing / trauma / salt). Seriously, quietly review the material experiments done in the previous year and find that deeper aspects meaning of salt. (visual effects / artistic perspectives), and their connection to current ideas, or maybe I need to overturn current ideas and find new directions.
