7. Focus on one part of the relationship between salt and the human body.
After mid-term, I thought the biggest problem in my work is that there is no basic topic to support my research, salt as my main material, what do I want to express with it? So I used the whole vacation time to think what do I really want to do? And to respond to the suggestions and questions given to me by my teachers and classmates.
1. Society's stereotype of salt is: it's just for seasoning, because it's too cheap. As the book named salt history said that“Salt is so common, so easy to obtain, and so inexpensive that we have forgotten that from the beginning of civilization until about 100 years ago, salt was one of the most sought-after commodities in human history”
2. What do I want people to feel through my work? It's a question that I've spent the most time to about it, and it's connected to the question of exactly what I'm doing.
After a conversation with a friend, I felt like I had found my way.
She asked me: "If you didn't do anything about salt, what would you like to do?"
Me:"Jewelry, that's what I've wanted to do always."
She:"So, what's your jewelry about? I mean the expression."
Me:"I prefer telling my own stories via jewelry, such as expressing emotions."
She:"What kind of emotions do you want to express?"
Me:"Similar to express sadness, because I think that when a person is unable to express their inner pain, it can be expressed by wearing jewelry, its role is like a medium."
She:“I remember that you made a piece of jewelry which made by salt, how did it develop? what is the stating point of it ?"
Me:"The first idea is that" the frustration and hurt I suffered as a child is painful, but the pain doesn't disappear because of time and growth. Even if you look at everybody right now who looks good on the outside, it's because everybody is hiding their injuries inside. 即使外人看来我还是我,但是我里面早就破烂不堪。Of course, I have tried to tell others, but no one got the same feeling, like when you were a child crying to adults, they didn't understand, as time passes, you will not say anymore to others. A big reason for choosing salt was that the pain was accompanied by tears, and when the tears dried, the salt stains would appear on the face. At the same time, the salt crystal themselves represent the meaning of time. Therefore, in my opinion, salt is not only a seasoning, but also a material which can represent the language meaning of time, elapse, pain and covering."
Me:"I suddenly realized that this was what I wanted to do —— I wanted to use my jewelry to help people to express their emotions (those childhood trauma that haven't been soothed by time). Like artists Sigalit Landau's art work named ballet skirt, she placed it in the dead sea for two years, then picked it up when the dress was already on the salt crystal package, I can feel some pain and the feeling of wanting to be cured from this art work. The oppression of the artist in childhood (asked by her mother to be a professional ballet dancer), accompanied by the abuse and quarrels of parents on this issue, as well as her own desire to choose the future, these are slowly covered by time, but the coverage is not forgotten, those pain is like memory has been preserved. I also hope that when the wearer and the viewer see my works, they will be able to empathize with me and think of their own past, you will find that there are other people like you, who are also in pain, and they are also trying to express, and even you may feel like finding a friend."
She:"Do you think your jewelry should be heal someone? Or is it just a display of emotion?"
Me:"I don't know yet, because my opinion is that these pains can't be cured."
She:"I think you know what do you want o do now"
Me:"Yes! I found that I had been troubled by the word "salt" before. Salt was just the main material of my work, but what I really wanted to do was the story behind it."
3. Which kind of forms can represent salt, I don't think salt is definite in any form, just as its value cannot be evaluated. But in my work, salt comes in the form of naturally crystals. As artist Roger Hiorns said that “The crystal starts from the scale level of the molecule, it has its specific set form, from which it cannot move or deviate, unless of course there is impurity introduced. In the environment of the saturate the crystal grows forever outwards. It reproduces itself, it has its own system.
The natural form of the crystal and the process of growth itself is an interesting thing.”
