How to combine table salt into large salt blocks and allow it has high hardness, this problem has become my main exploration goal at present.
In the past, I used super glue to combine them. Salt slices like that are very fragile, not as good as I expected. So I started using another method.
Mixed the salt with water and placed it at the bottom of the bowl. After a few days, the salt to be crystal. The disadvantage of this sample is that it is brittle and difficult to shape.
After that, I found new method. Putting the salt into the mold and heating them by microwave, which can get a salt crystal with high hardness and can be sculpted. The interesting point is that when I show this cube to other peoples, most people would ask ” is it sugar?” Why do people pay a lot more attention on sugar than salt? How many people know about the beauty of salt? A lot of questions are starting to appear in my mind.
“Is it sugar? “I started thinking about this problem from the audience, and I decided to develop it in two directions:
1. Creating misunderstandings. Using salt to make unexpected objects, and tell audiences the real material which can amplify the contrast.
2. Highlight the characteristics and texture of salt as a material, so that the viewer can intuitively feel the beauty of salt.
I started using salt to make bigger objects which relate to human’s daily life. I chose the image of the coffee cup. because when I walked on the streets of London, I found that almost all of people have a cup of coffee . If everyone take a coffee cup which made by salt? This situation is quite interesting. So I used silicone to make a cup mould, added salt into it, then heated.
Through this experiment, I decided to use salt to make more people’s daily life objects, and to find some better ways to crystalize salt.
